Andorra Travel Guide

Andorra is a tiny country in the Pyrenees between France and Spain. It's known for skiing in winter, hiking in summer, and duty-free shopping year-round. Andorra la Vella (the capital) is one big shopping mall. The mountains are beautiful. It's wealthy, safe, and a bit sterile. Most people visit for a day or two while traveling between France and Spain. If you like skiing or hiking in the Pyrenees, Andorra is worth a stop. Otherwise, it's skippable.

Overview

Andorra is tiny. The entire country is about 180 square miles (smaller than New York City). It's nestled in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, and most people visit for skiing, hiking, or duty-free shopping.

Andorra la Vella (the capital) is one big shopping center. Electronics, alcohol, cigarettes, and luxury goods are all tax-free, so people come from France and Spain to shop. If you're not interested in shopping, there's not much to do in the capital.

The mountains are why you'd visit Andorra. Grandvalira and Vallnord are the main ski resorts. They're modern, well-maintained, and less crowded than resorts in France or Switzerland. Skiing is cheaper here too. In summer, the mountains are great for hiking. Trails range from easy walks to multi-day treks.

Caldea is a massive spa complex with thermal baths, saunas, and pools. It's touristy but relaxing if you want to unwind after skiing or hiking.

Andorran food is Catalan with French and Spanish influences. Expect hearty mountain food (stews, grilled meats, cheese). It's not particularly memorable.

Andorran people are a mix of Catalan, Spanish, and French. Catalan is the official language, but Spanish and French are widely spoken. English is common in tourist areas.

Getting to Andorra requires going through France or Spain (there's no airport). Buses connect Andorra to Barcelona, Toulouse, and other nearby cities. If you're driving, the mountain roads are scenic but winding.

Andorra is more expensive than Spain but cheaper than France or Switzerland. Hostels run $20-30/night. A meal at a restaurant is $12-20. Skiing is cheaper than in neighboring countries.

When to go: Winter (December-March) for skiing. Summer (June-September) for hiking. Spring and fall are quiet, and many mountain facilities are closed.

Andorra is fine for skiing or hiking in the Pyrenees, but it's not a must-see. Most people visit for a day or two and move on.
